As you may know I have a soft spot for soft pastel colors. So I have decided to show you some of my favourite food colors that I have in my tool box. Although I have a lot of different colors I always end up using colors from the same box. I’m not sure why, but I have really difficulties working with strong powerful colors. So when I have to use more strong colors (often for boy themes) I still keep the colors soft. There are a lot of different food color brands on the market, maybe more than the ones that I know of. So far I have three favourite brands: AmeriColor, Sugar Flair and Squires Kitchen. I have used the ones I love the most for color samples. I have also made some color samples of the green colors that I use for gumpaste leaves and royal icing piped wines. It is often two green colors mixed into a new color. Lets start, from left to right. 1. Pink: My most used pink color are Pink/Sugar Flair. Here shown in three color tones, from light to dark. 2. Yellow: Cream/Sugar Flair, Melon/Sugar Flair, Cream & Melon mixed together, [...]

I have a few favourite tools that I always have ready whenever I make gum paste decorations. I like to call them my gum paste helpers: A: The “egg foam trays”, are always good to have. They are great when making Hydrangea’s and 5 petal flowers. B: My cornstarch container. I use this for gum paste decorations such as pearls and other types of decorations that is round in the shape. This way can I prevent a “flat” backside on the decorations. C: For roses, lillies and other types of flowers these Celformers (from Celcakes) are good to have. I also use them when making heads for my figurines. You can even make them yourself with a glass and foil. Cheap and easy! D: Small plastic palette trays for small cut out flowers. There are one gum paste helper that I dont have but would soo love to have. One of those “trees” with lots of dowels, where you can hang your wired flowers and dry your bow loops on. I have thought of maybe make it myself with a little help from my DH. I just need to work at little more on how I (he) should make one [...]

One of Wiltons lately new invensions that I really love, are their fantastic Fondant Imprint Mats. Flexible 20×20″ (50x50cm) mats that makes gorgeous imprints on your rolled fondant in four designs: Graceful Vines, Floral Fantasy, Happy Birthday and Star Power. They are so easy to use: 1. Roll out the fondant on a lightly cornstarch dusted surface about 1/8″ thick (3mm). Try not to dust the top of the fondant, as the mat release itself quite easy without tearing. 2. Place your fondant imprint mat on top. 3. Take a large rolling pin and start with a firm preassure to roll the pin over the mat and fondant. 4. If you want to cover a cake, transfer both mat and fondant and carefully peel off the mat. Remember to gently smooth the fondant on the cake with your hands, so that you dont ruin the imprint. 5. If you want to decorate cookies or cupcakes? Peel off the mat carefully and now cut out the desired shapes with your cutters. 6. You can of course also make bows and ribbons using the fondant imprints mats. If you like, you can paint the imprints with food colors or lustre dust to [...]

Do you know who is cupcakes best friend? It is the Cupcake Courier. A wonderful and stylish little helper that allows you to carry 36….. yes 36 cupcakes all in one go. It have three stack and removeable cupcake trays. It will keep your cupcakes safe and preventing the frosting and decoration from getting squashed under transport. It is invented, designed and developed by Jennifer Gunn. A mother of two who needed a safely way to transport cupcakes to her children’s parties and school gatherings. This is a must have for everyone who loves to bake cupcakes! So last week I went on a Cupcake Courier hunt and my first stop online was at the Cupcake Courier distributor in Australia. I found mine from Squires Kitchen…….Yeahh!! My search was over and I went straight on to their site and ordered a Cupcake Courier. European readers can find it here and here So today my very own Cupcake Courier in petal pink arrived on my doorstep and ohh it is soo beautiful. I know that I will cherish this forever. Of course you have to have in mind how tall your decorated cupcakes is so that you wont have any trouble [...]

I was lucky to meet Karen Davies last year at the Scandinavian Cake Show in Sweden where she was demonstrating her new silicone fondant moulds and on my regular browsing through my favourite sugarcraft supply sites, my eyes spotted the new and very sweet cupcake moulds from Karen Davies along with the text: “Many cake decorators enjoy making and decorating cup cakes – the latest cake fashion. But – when the order comes in for 100 – you realize that’s a lot of baking, icing, and flower making etc. Our new moulds help you by doing several jobs in one go. By using our moulds, you have the decorated cup cake top in one easy action”. I could not agree more Sometimes it is ok to take the short cut and here you get both the fondant disc and top decoration all in one go, now that is easy! What I also like is that with small flowers, butterflies, shimmers, glitters, edible pearls ect you can make the cupcakes even more stylish and personal. I even think that the cupcake moulds could be used as a “quick” decoration on cookie lollys as well. So if you are looking for some [...]

I remember back when I bought some of my first cake dekoration tools. What was good to start with? and what was not that important? It was so easy to spend too much money on equipment and I must admit that I still do have unpacked cutters in my tool box. So now I try to be more critical whenever I see something new on the cake decorating market because do I really need it? So to help newcommers to the cake decorating universe on what to spend your money on first. I have writen a basic list that hopefully will help you to deside what you need the most. Note: not all of the tools I am talking about is on the photo. Cake pans: you can always start out with some basic ones. But when you want to spend money on “real” cake pans then go for brands like: Wilton, Silverwood, Fat Daddios and Invicta. Rolling pin: Do try and see if you can get a long one. Because you can also use it to “roll up” your fondant and transfer it to the cake. Use a shorter and smaller one when you make decorations. You can get [...]

My favourite online store to buy cookie cutters from is the Cakes Cookies & Crafts Shop. They have just to mention a few things, a lovely range of cookie cutters, edible decoration, cupcake cases, the best cookie sticks because they are slightly thinner than the ones from Wilton Topsy Turvy cake and of course I had to try it out. When I placed my last order they were so sweet to send me the new Cookie cutter texture set as well. The set comes with three different embossing sheets. Two match the cutters shape and the last has an all-over design so it can be used for much than just cookies. Use it to emboss fondant covered cupcakes, make embossed ribbons to decorate around a cake, small fondant cut-outs, make a beautilful embossed bow or you can use it to make a sweet baby blanket if you are making a christening cake. There are four different cookie cutter texture sets (baby onsie, heart & weddingcake). You can paint the embossed details with soft gel colours, blossom tints or lustre dust. Just mix it with a few drops of clear alcohol and paint with a super fine paint brush. Or you [...]

They are a bit larger than the other alphabet tappit sets (about 1,5″ high). Use them on your cake or just put a single letter or number on your cupcakes and cookies. When I use the tappit sets I like to roll out my rolled fondant thinly and let it dry slightly. Thats makes it more easy for me to get the fondant out of the tappit set.
Embossing sticks and textured rolling pins are great tools to have. It gives you the opportunity to add amazing details to your fondant covered cakes and cookies. The embossing sticks are from Holly Products. The first photo shows set 2, and the second photo shows set 10. Lately I have used them on my cookies with fantastic results. But you can also make some beautiful borders to finish off your cakes (see photo below). When I use textured rolling pins I do not use them on the whole cake. I like to use them for smaller details. Fx. if you are to making a baby shower cake, you could use it for the baby’s blanket and/or for the bib and so on. You could also use them for borders on cakes and cookies as well. The two larger textured rolling pins is from Jem Cutters and the smaller on is from Cuquis Design Inc. They have so many sweet designs so it is hard not to buy them all . In Europe you can get Cuquis Designs at CelCrafts. On the pictures below you can see examples on what the embossing sticks and the textured rolling pins can do: Happy [...]

I like to knead in a few drops of water and a small amount of white fat into my paste as it makes it more pliable and smooth when you press it through.
This is one of my favourite tools. It is a simple and easy silicone flower veiner and used together with small 5-petal flower cutters it makes beautiful little sugar flowers. The flower cutters I use most with it is: 5-petal (Orchard Products) and Petunia flowers(Tinkertech Two). When I make the sugar flowers I use sugar paste with a little CMC to make it hold its form when drying. You can buy the flower veiner here, the petunia cutter here and here. Note: There are two different sizes of the petunia cutter by Tinkertech Two that is best to use with the silicone veiner. Petunia cutters 5-petal flower cutters Happy Caking Louise

I have made this little duster filled with corn starch. I use it when I am rolling out my sugar paste, making sugar flowers ect. That way the sugar paste wont stick to the board or rolling pin. You just tap it lightly on the surface before starting rolling. It is very easy to make, learn how to make it here.
