Meet Melissa—a Miami native—and the owner of Smile Like Steve: a small but dedicated home-based baking operation in the Miami area run by Melissa and her mom. Melissa holds the title of ‘baker’, while her mom has earned the ‘decorator’ title within this family company. Together, their skills complement each and every cake they create—whether it’s a wedding cake, a birthday cake, or a unique custom cake for your special occasion.
Melissa began baking professionally with her brother, Steve, several years ago… They started with Steve’s ‘famous’ cheesecake recipe and soon branched out to offer a specialty rum cake as well. Sadly, Steve passed away unexpectedly shortly thereafter, dealing a harsh blow to Melissa and her family. In time, and with healing, Melissa and her mom decided to keep the baking operation going—and to honor Steve’s memory by naming the company after his very special and memorable smile. (In fact, the best smile ever!) And there you have it—with the love and support of family and friends—Smile Like Steve Specialty Cakes was established!
Another way Melissa honors her brother’s memory is by upholding his strong belief that only the best quality ingredients be used in everything they bake. Each delicious item made by Smile Like Steve incorporates 100% USDA certified organic dairy ingredients. Like Melissa says, ‘Anyone can bake a cake—but a really good quality cake is what we strive for.’
My cake designs are never copied from another baker. Of course, all bakers use standard elements that may resemble another’s methods—but I don’t consider myself a ‘Pinterest’ baker. I see lots of designs online that are recreated from other sites—and although they are beautiful—I want my customers’ orders to be unique.
One of Melissa’s favorite specialty items from the past was a Mr. Potato Head cake she made—which came together beautifully, then had a minor snag during transportation. In a pinch, and thinking quickly on her feet, Melissa found the perfect solution to put her creation back together again at a moment’s notice and prevailed over a possible disaster! The result: happily ever after for both customer and baker!
