3 Of Our Favorite Spice Cake Recipes

Spice cake is one of those versatile, delicious cake options that’s good for a sweet breakfast, after-dinner dessert, work party, church potluck, or just about any other occasion.

So, we’ve brought together three of our favorite recipes for your consideration for your next party.

Simple Spice Cake Recipe

Simple Spice Cake Recipe

This straightforward, super easy spice cake from Genius Kitchen will work for any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Butter a 9×12 pan and set aside.

3. Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl.

4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cake is firm.

5. Remove from the oven, and cool on a rack completely.

6. Once the cake is cooled, you can apply the icing, or if you’re looking for a spicy summer-time treat, let the cake cool most of the way, but serve will vanilla or chocolate icing while it’s still warm enough to melt that dairy dessert.

Zucchini Spice Cake

Zucchini Spice Cake

For a twist on a couple of classics, try this recipe from All Recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups grated unpeeled zucchini
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Grease a 9×13 inch pan and set aside.

3. Put the peeled zucchini in a colander and let drain.

4. While the zucchini is draining, whisk together baking soda, flour, baking powder, brown sugar, white sugar, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until thoroughly blended.

5. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, oil, applesauce, and vanilla together.

6. Now, fold in the dry mixture with the wet mixture.

7. Next, stir in the zucchini.

8. Pour the batter into the baking pan.

9. Bake the cake until a toothpick can be removed cleanly from the cake. This will take about 45 to 55 minutes.

10. Remove the cake from the oven, and let cool completely before serving.

Caramel Spice Cake

Caramel Spice Cake

For an extra sweet take on the spice cake, try out this sugary treat from All Recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/3 cups packed brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Grease and flour 2 9-inch pans.

3. Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Set aside.

4. In a different bowl, cream the brown sugar, shortening, and 1 cup of white sugar together, until light and fluffy.

5. Now, beat in the eggs, one at a time.

6. Next, stir in the 2 teaspoons of vanilla.

7. Beat the dry mixture into the wet mixture, alternating with 1 1/2 cups buttermilk at you beat.

8. Now, stir in the pecans.

9. Pour the batter into your pans, and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.

10. After the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before removing it to a wire cooling rack to finish cooling.

11. While the cake is cooling, combine butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 cup confectioner’s sugar, alternately mixing in 1/4 cup buttermilk. Beat until smooth.

12. Once the cake has completely cooled, spread the frosting over your scrumptious cake, and serve.
