Football Cake

Super Bowl 50 is just around the corner. That means that it’s time to start getting all of your party plans in order for the big game. When thinking of which super bowl desserts to make, you can never go wrong with a cake that relates to what the Super Bowl is all about. This easy football cake will be a huge hit for all your guests.

Out of the many different football cakes that you can make, this one by far is the best. It’s simple enough that it doesn’t take up the whole day so you have time to prepare all of your other super bowl snacks. And using a cool football cake pan makes clean up a breeze!

Here is what you need:

  • A football shaped cake pan
  • Your choice of cake flavor
  • 2 cups chocolate icing
  • 1 cup vanilla icing
  • 2 piping bags
  • Piping tips #10 and #18

Start by baking your desired cake and allowing it to cool. To begin decorating, fill one of your piping bags with the vanilla icing using tip #10. The white icing will be used for the laces and the white stripes.Begin on one side and make a vertical line that runs the entire way across to the other side. Do this to outline the white stripes on both side. Once you have the outlines done, proceed to fill them with 5 -6 more lines of icing.HINT: There is no need to worry about perfectly straight lines here. These little imperfections will be taken care of when we get to decorating the main football.

Step 1

Using a spatula that has been dipped in warm water, hold it at a 45 degree angle against the icing. Pressing gently, start on one side and work you way to the other (I find it easier to work in a back to front motion instead of side to side). You will have to dip the spatula in water periodically. This is very important to keep the icing looking smooth and to allow for a easier process.

Once you are done, continue using the same tip to add the laces. Once you have made 2 horizontal lines of icing connecting the lines on the sides, go back and add the smaller “dashes” extending across the center line.

Step 2

Once you are done, continue using the same tip to add the laces. Once you have made 2 horizontal lines of icing connecting the lines on the sides, go back and add the smaller “dashes” extending across the center line.

Step 3

Now you need to fill your second piping bag, ready with tip #18, with the chocolate icing. Begin by Hold the tip about 1/8 inch from the surface of the cake and squeeze the bag. When you have applied the desired amount of icing, be sure you are no longer squeezing the bag before you move the tip away. Start by lining the edge of the white moving from one side to the other. Continue this technique until you have completed the entire cake.

Your end results are sure to be loved by all the game day fanatics.
