How to make lion cupcake toppers

January 24, 2014 by CJ [email protected] Leave a Comment

Lion cupcake topper

Animal cupcake toppers are a fun way to dress up any cupcakes. They can be used for any occasion: baby shower, birthday cakes, etc. These lion cupcake toppers are super cute and really easy to make.

Here is what I used:

fondant (creamy yellow, ivory, grey and pink)
Rolling pin
Edible black marker
Zacto knife
Round cutter (about the size of your cupcake circumference)
Edible gum glue
Any piping tip
JEM tool – Flower Veiner # 12

Step 1:

Roll out the creamy yellow coloured fondant to about 1/4 of an inch thick. Using the round cutter, make a cut. After you have made the base of the Lion with the large round cutter, roll out some more creamy yellow fondant thinly.

Using any piping tip cut out 8-10 circles. These will be used to make the mane of the Lion.

Step 2:

Using edible gum glue, glue the small circles around the edge of the base of the topper.

Step 3:

Roll out a medium size fondant ball using the ivory coloured fondant. Once you have rolled the ball out smoothly, flatten the ball down with your thumb to create a medium sized circle.

Step 4:

Using the ivory fondant, roll out two small balls. Flatten them with pressing your finger onto the fondant. Then using a pointy fondant tool (or a tooth pick), poke some dots onto the fondant.  This will create two cheeks for the Lion.

Step 5:

Using the ivory coloured fondant, roll two tiny, smooth balls. Using your thumb press down onto the fondant. Then using the end of the JEM tool create a pocket in the fondant.

Roll two tiny pieces of pink fondant and place them into the pocket of the fondant pieces (not shown in picture)  This will make two ears for the Lion.

Step 6:

Using a small piece of grey fondant, roll into a tiny ball. This will create a nose for the Lion.

Step 7:

Using some edible gum glue, glue the round ivory fondant onto the base of the Lion topper. Also attach the two ears to the base.

Step 8:

Now attach the Lion’s cheeks using the gum glue.
