How to Guide for using SugarVeil Icing

Sugarveil icing is an ultra flexible and easy to use decorative icing that is taking the cake decorating world by storm. We spoke with the team at online cake decorating supply store www.MakeBake.co.uk to find out their expert guide on using the revolutionary cake decorating icing, SugarVeil:

What you will need:
– Sugarveil icing mix
– Sugarveil spreader
– Sugarveil mat
– Mixing Bowl
– Electric Whisk
– Spatula
– Cake Decorating Gel Paste (optional)

How to Guide:

Step 1.

Begin by emptying your Sugarveil icing mix into a mixing bowl. For a 142g sachet of icing mix, you will need to mix this with 120ml of boiling water.

Step 2.

Next take an electric whisk, and whisk the mix for about 4 minutes at full speed.

Step 3.

Once you have mixed the icing, cover the bowl with cling film – the icing will need to be left for 24 hours, as this will give it the perfect amount of time to set.

Step 4.

After the icing has rested, take a spatula and beat the icing – this will keep the icing to a smooth texture while knocking out any air bubbles.

Step 5.

If you want to colour your icing, now is the time to simply add a small amount of colour through using cake decorating gel paste.

Step 6.

Next, take your decorative Sugarveil mat, there are a number of impressive designs to choose from including lace, dots and floral patterns and using your spatula, evenly spread and stretch the icing across the mat.

Step 7.

To ensure an even consistency, take your Sugarveil spreader and press the icing mixture into the mat to ensure the icing moulds correctly to the pattern. When you have evenly spread icing across the mat, take the spreader to remove any excess, then use a damp cloth to wipe the edges.

Step 8.

You will now need to give your icing time to dry; it is best leaving the icing for at least 24 hours. When the icing is completely non-sticky to the touch, it is ready to be removed from the mat.

Step 9.

To carefully remove your icing, gently remove about 1cm of icing from the edge. Then take your spreader to pin the icing down – you should then be able to slowly and carefully pull the mat away, and the icing should gradually come off the mat.

Step 10.

    I made valentine hearts for cupcakes. I topped the cupcakes just before leaving for my meeting. When I removed the lid of the cardboard carrier by Wilton, my hearts were wilted. I made the hearts 1 week before I used them. I am sure the moisture of the icing caused the wilt, but what can I do to prevent this in the future? I sometimes have to deliver them and have the hostess display them so I wouldn’t be able to put them on at the site.

    I am struggling with my lace coming out of the mats I have tried different lengths of time in the oven its either to brittle or doesn’t want to come out of the mat also it doesn’t seem very strechy am I doing something wrong I followed all the directions on the package also I put in in the fridge overnight could that be the problem

    Beautiful designs!! This is the first I’ve heard of Sugarveil – considering the number of cupcakes I make I would love to achieve these kinds of results too. Will definitely have to check it out! 🙂
