5 Ingredient Desserts: Fact or Fiction?

March 24, 2016 by Louise Leave a Comment

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest. A lot of time. While perusing the myriad of boards and pins (P.S. Follow cakejournal on Pinterest) I’ve come across many recipes claiming to be extremely delicious despite only having 5 or less ingredients. I’m very skeptical of this.  There’s no way a dessert can be scrumptious and made from less than 5 ingredients. Right?

Every week on cakejournal.com, I will try to answer that question. I will seek out the best “5 ingredients” recipes and put them to the test. They will be tested by friends and family, who will decide if 5 ingredients or less recipes are fact or fiction.

The first recipe I will be challenging is a 3 ingredient recipe for chocolate banana muffins.

The recipe boasts an easy and delicious tutorial that features equal amounts of banana and chocolate with no flavor overpowering the other.

All that is needed for the recipe is a box of chocolate cake mix, 3-4 medium sized bananas and 2 eggs. Mix all the ingredients together and pour into a lined muffin pan and bake for 16-18 minutes at 350 Fahrenheit.

I preheated my oven to the suggested temperature. I mashed up 3 semi-ripe bananas in a bowl, as I would for banana bread. I added the chocolate cake mix and the eggs. I combined well. The consistency was a bit too thick, so I added about a tablespoon and a half of water.  This helped a lot.

I lined a muffin tin and poured the batter in.

I baked the muffins for 16 minutes and that was plenty enough time.

The muffins came out looking fine. They weren’t the prettiest, but in the game of five ingredient baking, looks mean nothing. Taste is everything.

I allowed a group of ten, trusted tasters to try out my creation. Off the bat, they were a bit skeptical of the muffin. They all took a bite and decided that while it was delicious, it had more of a cupcake consistency. The chocolate “muffin” was very chocolatey with a nice amount of banana. The muffin was moist, gooey and airy. People enjoyed it!

I give the recipe a 7.5/10 and claim it as fact-ish. The “muffin” was yummy but I wouldn’t classify it as a muffin. This recipe would be great if you’re in a pinch and you need something quick to satisfy your sweet tooth.
