It’s not always possible to decorate cakes with fondant due to time constraints. So, every once in a while, I need to apply a quick and easy technique on a cake and be sure that it still looks pretty.
Some of the easy techniques I love to do on cakes involve the use of a spatula… the messy ruffle effect, the petal effect and the whimsical circular effect. These are all done with only a spatula!
But, you can also create a rough and textured look on your cakes with just a fork. It’s very easy and looks pretty cool!
Here is a close-up for the side of the cake…
And here is a close-up for the top of the cake…
To do this technique, you will need the following supplies:
Fork
Buttercream icing
Cake
Notes:
– I used chocolate buttercream icing but you can use whatever flavored icing you like.
-Medium to thin consistency works best.
– Also, avoid using “crusting” buttercream. I tried it and it didn’t look too good.
These are the steps:
Step 1:
-Frost your cake in buttercream icing.
-Place it on a turntable.
-Start off by applying the fork technique to the side of your cake…
-Position your fork horizontally along the side of the cake until you feel that the “teeth” are digging slightly into the icing.
-Now, hold your hands still and start moving your turntable and you will see a cool horizontal line pattern forming.
-Continue to do this until the side of your cake is entirely covered in this pattern.
Step 2:
-Now, position your fork vertically and start dragging the fork all the way from the bottom of the cake to the top of the cake.
-You will end up with sort of a criss-cross design.
-Continue to do this until the side of your cake is entirely covered in this pattern.
Step 3:
-For the top of your cake, hold the fork in a bit of an angle.
-Start dragging your fork from the edge of the cake to the center, while moving your turntable.
Step 4:
-You will end up with a big blob of icing in the center.
-Just scoop it with a spoon and remove it but you will see a disrupted pattern in the center. You can easily fix it by dragging the fork through the centre a few times.
-I used an apple topper on the cake which covered any flaws. So, I didn’t need to fix anything.
And you are done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial 🙂
Happy caking everyone!
