How to Make Edible Glitter for Cake: Step-by-step Easy Tutorial

by Kristen Leave a Comment

Glitters drew everyone’s attention because of how sparkling and attractive they are.  However, some people may be confused by the usage of glitter on cakes, not realizing that they are edible glitters.

For more information, sugar, acacia, maltodextrin, cornstarch, and color additives expressly permitted for food consumption, such as mica-based pearlescent pigments and FD&C colors like FD&C Blue No. 1, are common ingredients in edible glitter or dust. Consuming small amounts of non-toxic glitter on food will not kill you, so don’t worry if you eat something intended to be decorative.

Baking and decorating cakes at home gives you a great sense of accomplishment, but adding glitters to the recipe elevates your creations to the next level. Instead of a basic white icing coat, sprinkle edible glitter over a thin layer of this miraculous powder to transform the cake into an iridescent work of art.

Furthermore, if your decorating talents are lacking, glitter may come to your help and transform you into a cake monster! The easy step-by-step tutorial below will help create edible glitter for your special cake. You may also read White Chocolate Fondant, Making a Birthday Cake, and White Wedding Cake.

Edible Glitter Ingredients

  • 2 oz (57 g) of cool water
  • 15 grams (5 tsp) of Knox powdered gelatin
  • 1 tsp of metallic dust

Instructions To Follow

These edible glitter cake tutorials are elegant and stylish. You can make an elegant cake that is simple and suitable for people of all ages. If you’re searching for a shimmery cake, this is it!

Step 1: First, fill a small dish halfway with water. Spread gelatin evenly over the water and set aside for 5 minutes to absorb.

Step 2: Next, microwave for 30 seconds, then stir and microwave for 5 seconds more if necessary to simply melt. Furthermore, you know that it’s already melted when there are no more visible gelatin grains.

Step 3: Allow for 5 minutes for bubbles to rise to the surface and form a white foam. Remove the foam from the surface with a spoon and discard it.

Step 4: Stir the metallic dust into the melted gelatin.

Step 5: Pour the gelatin onto a large plastic wrap and smooth it out using a pastry brush. Smoothing the gelatin will become simpler as it cools. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect; continue grinding.

Step 6: Allow the gelatin to air dry overnight. It may begin peeling on its own, or you may need to peel it away from the plastic to free it.

Step 7: Cut it into pieces or break it up.

Step 8: Place in a spice grinder, coffee grinder, or food processor until very fine.

Final Word

Edible glitter is a game changer if you want to embellish your cakes and make them stand out. The fine glitter powder provides a magnificent shine and beauty to your projects and is adaptable. You can dust the powder over your cakes with a fine dusting brush or combine it with vodka to make a paint for adding detail. Alternatively, you can cut a stencil and apply the powder through it to create amazing patterns and effects. Always get edible powder unless you do not intend to consume the decoration. Check with the maker to ensure the item is food-safe before storing it in a cold, dry, dark place.

Above all, remember to have fun! Decorating cakes is fun and fulfilling, and edible glitter expands the possibilities even further! Do you have any prior experience with this product? Why not tell us about your experience in the comments section below?
