How to Make Watermelon Cupcakes

by Louise 3 Comments

watermelon cupcakes

I have seen so many different types of watermelon cupcakes online and they are all beautiful.

Today, I am sharing a tutorial for a cluster of cupcakes that look like a slice of watermelon.

It’s fairly simple to make and you don’t need to use any fondant…. just buttercream icing! 😀

To make these watermelon cupcakes, you will need the following supplies:

Red buttercream icing
Green buttercream icing
Black buttercream icing
15 chocolate cupcakes
Wilton tip # 104
Wilton tip # 3

Here are the instructions:

Step 1:
Prepare your red, green and black buttercream icings.
Fill a piping bag with each colored icing.
Attach tip # 104 to the bag with green icing
Attach tip # 104  to the bag with red icing
Attach tip # 3 to the bag with black icing.

Step 2:
Hold your red piping bag at a 45 degree angle, along the outer edge of the cupcake.
Squeeze the bag until icing comes out and then pull towards yourself.
This is shown by the direction of the black arrow in this picture.

Step 3:
Continue to pipe these “petal-like” shapes along the outside of your cupcake.

Step 4:

Eventually, you will end up with a single row of petals.

Step 5:
Now, you will move inwards and repeat steps 2-4 until the center is covered in red petals too.

Step 6:
Your cupcake should look like this now…

Step 7:
It’s time to make the seeds.
Hold your black piping bag at a 45 degree angle.
Squeeze your bag until icing comes out and quickly pull away.
Do this a few times to make as many seeds as you like.
Repeat steps 2-7 on a total of seven cupcakes.
These will represent the red juicy portion of the watermelon.

Step 8:
Now, repeat steps 2-6 on eight cupcakes, using green buttercream icing.
These will represent the green outer shell of the watermelon.

Arrange these cupcakes in the shape of a watermelon on a big cake tray.

And you are done!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

Happy caking everyone! 🙂

I would love to post this on my Facebook page, but I can’t find any link that is just for the watermelon cupcakes. Am I missing it somewhere? I have no idea how to post anything that doesn’t have a link. There seems to be a lot with Facebook that I’ve never figured out. But I just want to see if I’m missing a link somewhere.

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial of how to make watermelon cupcakes. After reading your detailed steps and viewing the pictures I think these will be doable. I am going to try making these for July 4th. I think I will make one batch of cupcakes which should give me two clusters of watermelon.
I absolutely love baking and especially enjoy baking and decorating cupcakes. I am not always that creative and adventurous with my Wilton tips. Hopefully after practicing on one or two cupcakes I will get it.
Thank you again for sharing. I will have to check out some of your other blog posts. Happy baking:).
