If you or your kids have grown up playing the Mario Brothers Games, Donkey Kong, or Mario Kart, you might be thinking about throwing a Mario themed birthday party!
This fun Nintendo game is arguably one of the world’s most well-known, and most iconic video games of all time. The first Super Mario Brothers game was released in 1985. Over the years, this game series has involved a large cast of characters that most of us have seen on t-shirts or backpacks.
If you’re making a Mario cake for your brother, he might enjoy a more nostalgic cake featuring old images or vintage consoles. If you’re making the cake for anyone under twenty, something from the Mario Kart games might be a great way to go.
Either way, you’ll have fun making it, and have a cake you’ll be proud to show off at the birthday party of the year.
How to Make a Mario Cake
1. Choose Your Cake Flavor
First off, you’ll need to start with an awesome cake recipe. Depending on the flavors the birthday boy or girl loves, you could try any of these recipe options. Of course, there are a maybe a million other flavor options out there, but we love these for a birthday cake.
- Chocolate Cake
- Vanilla Cake
- Carrot Cake
- Red Velvet Cake
- Lemon Cake
- Banana Cake
- Lemon Poppy Seed Cake
- Peanut Butter Cake
- Chocolate Raspberry Cake
- Apple Spice Cake
- Mocha Cake
- Coconut Lime Cake
- Coconut Cake
- Chocolate Almond Cake
2. Choose Your Frosting Flavor
Next, you’ll need to decide on which frosting flavor(s) you’ll use to make this awesome cake. Some top choices to consider:
- Peppermint mocha
- Peppermint chocolate
- Creamy Chocolate
- Simple Buttercream
- Salted Caramel
- White Chocolate Cream
- Toasted Marshmallow
- Cherry Vanilla
- Peanut Butter
- Orange Cream
Of course, some of these options will work better than others because of natural coloring from ingredients, but you can find creative ways to incorporate some of them into the décor anyway. Just remember to withhold food coloring until you’re ready to start decorating.
3. Choose Your Character(s)
Before you bake the cake, you’ll have a few decisions to make. First, you’ll need to decide which character(s) you’d like to have. Different characters or designs will require different pans, plans, and approaches.
Some characters to choose from include:
- Princess Peach
- Hammer Bro
- Cheep Cheep
- Koopa Troopa
- Bullet Bill
If you know the honoree’s favorite character, you should probably start there, and look for the right pans and tools you’ll need to make that character’s cake.
4. Choose the Type of Cake
Next, you’ll have to decide which type of cake you’ll be making. A cake that looks like a single character, or a cake with a scene on it can both be reasonably easy to make for the creative.
You can always make a plain colored cake and create a scene with fondant, gum paste, or marzipan decorations depicting Mario fighting his nemesis Bowser, or rescuing the ever-damsel-in-distress, Princess Peach.
Other fun ideas for the type of cake could include:
- Making a cake in the shape of a Nintendo console, with character figurines on top
- Making a cake shaped like a Nintendo game cartridge with Mario and the crew on the cover
- Making a cake to look like a Mario Kart vehicle with any of the characters driving it
- Making the cake from the end of Mario 64
Now, to the Instructions
